Amarantos

The area

The thermal Springs of Amarantos is a unique European phenomenon. The hot air thermal springs steaming from the bowls of the headland mountains of Epirus creates a mystic place. The springs are located close to the mountainous Municipality of Konitsa, an area famous for the amazing natural environment, the outstanding cultural and religious monuments and the astonishing local architecture. These characteristics have turned the wider area of Konitsa to an emerging tourist destination. The place offers a variety of opportunities for alternative tourism and ecotourism throughout the year. The visitor can go rafting at the rivers, climbing and mountain biking at the exciting mountains of Pindus. There are also hiking routes as parts of a wider network of trails in the Epirus Region (to Pyrsoyianni settlement, to Sarandaporo river).

In close proximity to Amarantos, there are great monuments of cultural heritage: famous traditional stone bridges, watermills, traditional villages of exceptional beauty and historical churches and monasteries (Molyvdoskepasti Monastery-7th century AD, Panagia Stomio Monastery, the Holy Monasteries of Zerma, Molisti and Kavasila).

At the Amarantos thermal springs there are some existing thermal spas infrastructures. However, they must be modernized and upgraded in order to follow the demands and the international trends of the tourist market and attract more visitors.

The main interventions that are included in TheRout_Net project for the Amarantos thermal baths are:

  • Upgrading the Bath facilities with modernization and expansion interventions
  • Energy upgrading of buildings and creation of thermal comfort conditions.
  • Modernization of the individual Baths
  • Upgrading of the inhalation therapy cabins.
  • Provision for changing rooms, WC, and public WC in accordance with the applicable specifications
  • Modernization and equipment of the clinic.

Additionally, the project will contribute to the promotion of the thermal springs. As part of the new cross border tourist product, they will obtain a new dynamic regarding its extroversion and international endorsement.
