Description
The amphitheatre was built between 1996 and 1998 and included in the national mapping of contemporary national architecture. The compositional principle is intended to evoke the disused salt pond in the same area. It is dictated by the original orography, equal to an altitude of – 2.60 metres. Within it, a morphological-spatial composition aims to combine and rework the historical archetypes of the very notion of theatre. It is configured, in fact, as a palimpsest of three ‘theatrical’ types. Dialectically intersected, they are the Greco-Roman Amphitheatre, the 18th-century theatre, and the contemporary experimental theatre. Three ideal “fragments” of the theatre were given to celebrate the typological evolution in the different morphological-functional devices, organically united in a single enclosure, functioning as a “sound box”.
Linking them are the orographic, functional and perceptive progressions, restitutive of a de facto open and changeable layout, capable of resolving the aspects linked to the elimination of architectural barriers and of rendering the conditions of visibility and acoustic performance perfectly compliant. All this, in adherence to the urban fabric, from which it learns the layout of the entrances, strategically aligned with some of its routes.
